Digging into the “Day of the Dead”

If you’re anything like us, when you first heard about the “Day of the Dead”, a Mexican holiday celebrated every November 1st, you were a bit perplexed. Over here at the studio we are in agreement that the first images that came to our minds were all associated with darkness, death, and Halloween-like graphics- yet- after further investigation, we found that day is characterized by anything but.

Originating from the rich Mexican culture, “The Day of the Dead” is an occasion which is centered around celebration of individuals who have passed on. Participants gather with friends and family for a day full of festivities- all honoring their close companions whose spirits they still believe surround them. The holiday is characterized by intricately designed crafts, colorful skull imagery and most importantly, superfluous amounts of smiles and songs.

People attend a plethora of parades on this day with the majority choosing to dress up in costume in honor of their deceased comrades (how fun!):

Spending just an hour at the studio would reveal that not one of our team members can say “no” to any holiday which provides us a platform for “stacking on” color. Thus, we are all decked out in Nissa’s popular skull jewelry in honor of today. You don’t have to tell us twice to hang on to some of our Halloween-inspired baubles for a bit longer;) Wonder what were wearing? Take a look…

We joked earlier that we thought Christmas was our favorite day of festivities yet after discovering the “Day of the Dead”, an occasion which combines two of our most beloved things (color and skulls!), we may have to re-evaluate it’s standing as #1:) If you can’t get enough of the fun and festive ‘feel’ of the the holiday head on over to our "Skull-ful Celebrations" Pinterest board! We’ve collected some of the most intriguing Day of the Dead- inspired images, recipes and crafts for you to dabble in if you find yourself with some free time!

We hope that everyone is enjoying National Flip Flop Day as much as we are! If you haven’t checked out our tutorial on how revamp your old pair of rubber footgear be sure to take a peak:) Also, bet you never thought that you would see a giant monkey made from more than 10,000 flip flops right?! The giant ape was conceptualized by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and was featured in Brazil last November- pretty awesome!

National Flip-Flop Day: Keep Calm and Flop On

One of the only things that can improve upon the fact that it is finally Friday (wahoo!) is that we had (okay.. maybe we gave ourselves) a reason to sport our most fun and funkiest flip flops to the studio today in honor of National Flip Flop Day! While we can’t deny that our brightly colored rubber footwear were getting us stares during our commute this morning, we took the looks with pride and returned them with slight smirks- haters (in polished leather loafers and painfully high heels) gonna hate;)

While we sat around the studio discussing various flip-flop ‘flashbacks’ (does anyone else remembering sporting them in the showers back in college when it was ‘dangerous’ to go in barefoot, HA) we thought what better way to conclude the work week then an unconventional and creative craft!? Immediately the design table became overwhelmed with glue, needles, some of the staff’s most favorited beads and embellishment and of course, our fabulously-fluorescent footgear.

Feast your eyes upon how the Nissa Jewelry crew transformed their stereotypical summer slip-ons into first-class fashions..

Laetitia, from our ‘PR’ department, breezed through the craft in less than twenty minutes, utilizing the classic ‘glue and tie’ method, creating a pretty spiffy design:

Next, Allison, representing the ‘Marketing’ team, pulled out the needle and thread- and doing what she does best- sewed those suckers on! Her flip-flops turned out fantastic as well:

Third times a charm, right? Emily, from our “Design” divison, showed most of the staff up with her innovative approach to the flip-flop challenge- decking out her sunshine yellow footwear with a detachable accessories! The epitome of flip-flop fabulousness, her creation triples as foot jewelry, an anklet, and a necklace!

Lastly, our “Business Operations” superstar, Ellina, took a page (and a little assistance) from Emily’s book and also composed a multi-functional design! She spruced up her classic white pair with some scrap chain and metal pieces that detach in order to create not only a necklace and a bracelet but also an awesome anklet! Behold, the product of team-work at it’s finest over here at the studio:)

Obviously, we’re celebrating National Flip Flop Day over here at the studio in style and honestly, our crew can’t compliment this craft enough (not to mention it was fun to see everyone’s personalities come out in this ‘speedy’ and simple DIY)! If you’re looking for a special way to spend your lazy Saturday why not call up some sidekicks, bring out the snacks and flop on?

Nissa Inspired Nails

Hooray! It’s already Thursday- meaning theres only one more day until the work week is complete! Yet in light of our influx of sales from our rope bracelets on Good Morning America’s ‘Deals and Steals’ segment on Tuesday (you can still get them at their discounted price until midnight tonight!)- it is undeniable that there is much to do before 6pm on Friday. With that being said, our hour of lunch is always spent taking advantage of the countless outlets o’ procrastination the wonderful world wide web provides us with, most notably and obviously our favorite- (in light of our current contest in which you can score free Nissa Jewelry)- Pinterest!

Each Nissa member has their favorite board to skim through- our intern Emma joked about how she excessively pinned baked goods to the point that her friends threatened to stop following her- but general consensus at the studio is that our most browsed and beloved board is: “Women’s Apparel”. It is from there that the inspiration for our second ‘Do It Yourself’ activity came about. Recently, we’ve observed that our favorite category has been flooded with the most creative and unique nail art. The alluring artwork caused the gears to start turning in our heads (in addition to eliciting a new found respect for people with enough patience to, for example, intricately depict the most relaxing of days at the beach- with everything from volleyball to kite-flying, haha).

Therefore, we decided to design some nail art around the textures and colors of a couple of our customers’ favorite pieces! Behold, Nissa Jewerly inspired nail art…

First, our Manta Stingray Cuff takes the spotlight:

Next, our ever popular Aventine Earrings in Tribal (which you can win in our contest this week!) take the stage:

Whether you’re a neutral/nude polish kinda girl or get down with the funkiest of nail fashions (…wut?) it’s always fun to experiment with new and fresh ideas. Next time you slip on a trendy arm party or a bold cocktail ring, why not paint on some polish to match? If you need some more inspiration head on over to our ♥ nissa inspired nails’ board on Pinterest to look at some eclectic nail art that reminded us of Nissa Jewelry!

Not going to lie, we love the sound of the rain against the roof of our studio but along with the soothing sound comes a desire for a warm blanket, a Nora Jones inspired- soundtrack and mid afternoon siesta. Therefore, rain, rain go away… don’t come back for the rest of the day.
